Welcome! I'm so glad you are here! My name is Jeanette Avery, The Teacher Tutor. Hiring a tutor for your child is a big decision. Finding the RIGHT tutor for your child can be a challenge. Read on to get to know me better and see if I may be a good fit for your family.
Let's talk about some of the most important questions when looking for a tutor.
1. What are your qualifications, certifications, or credentials?I'm a teacher! I am currently certified to teach grades K-6. I have taught grades 4-7. I've also worked with 8th grade students in math during summer school. I am currently an AIG (Academically/Intellectually Gifted) specialist.
I also received tutor training from Crossroads of Learning.
I'm a hold an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and Sociology. I also have master's degrees in Elementary Education and School Administration, and a Certificate of Business Foundations (half of an MBA degree).
In the public school system, I've worked as a substitute, teacher assistant, teacher, assistant principal, principal, Sr. Director (Research & Accountability), and AIG Specialist/Testing Coordinator. I was also one of the first employees of CASE Assessments, a private benchmark testing company used in several districts in NC. We built this division of TE21 from scratch!!
I've done A LOT of things in education. I understand the system and have a wealth of personal resources I can use to help your child succeed.

2. How long have you been tutoring? That's a tough question, because I've tutored off and on informally for many years. I don't know how many years it all adds up to! My guess would be about two years. However, I always worked with my students after school. This counts as tutoring, but I didn't get paid of it. My eight years of classroom teaching experience includes four years in 4th grade, 1 year in 5th grade, 2 years in 6th grade (math), and 1 year in 7th grade (math).
3. What is your teaching philosophy? In today's classrooms, Essentialism/Perennialism and Progressivism seem to be in a constant battle. Progressivism appears to be the ideal and any school you go to will probably go on and on about their progressive beliefs. However, in my experience, in most places Essentialism/Perennialism is far more dominant. So, what's MY philosophy? I believe there is a time and place for most things, so there is some value in each of these schools of thought. I tend to lean more towards progressivism. I believe my role is to facilitate student learning and provide students with the support and enrichment they need to be successful in a safe, warm, and positive environment.
4. What sets you apart from other tutors? Why should we hire you?
Bottom line, I CARE DEEPLY about the success of my students. I will do whatever it takes to try to make a concept click. I try to make my sessions laid back, yet demanding. It's not uncommon for students to fear math and have very little, if any, confidence in their ability to perform well their math class. Math is seen as HARD! I focus on changing that mindset to math is FUN! I keep it interactive, provide plenty of opportunities for success, ask a lot of probing and guiding questions, stay tuned into my students' mood and level of understanding, and get them talking and laughing while DOING math.
I also have access to more math resources than any other math tutor you'll run across! This makes me very flexible. If your child is in a school district using Eureka Math or Open Up Resources, I've taught using these curriculums and all the free material floating around online that schools use. This means I can help students with the EXACT problems they are doing in class. I can pre-teach or reinforce learning objectives. I can also help prepare students for upcoming tests. With parental permission, I can even stay in contact with your child's teacher for information about what is being taught in class and updates on your child's performance in school. I can use this information to sync up what happens in the classroom with what is covered during tutoring sessions.
If you are looking to accelerate your child, I can comfortably teach math through Pre-Algebra. I am open to helping with Algebra 1, though I have never taught an Algebra 1 course. One summer I taught a gifted student, that just finished the 6th grade, the entire 7th grade math curriculum! The student went into the 7th grade feeling confident and well prepared.
Are you looking for enrichment activities such as Breakout rooms, Escape Rooms, STEM lessons, and Project Based Learning activities? I can make these activities available!
I will also post math videos covering specific concepts that students can refer to as needed. You'll also have access to a collection of games, puzzles, practice worksheets, and websites that can be used for extra practice, challenge, and fun!
Let me know what YOU are looking for for YOUR child. I'm not a cookie-cutter tutor!
